Makita XCU03PT1 LXT Cordless Chain Saw Review

My Rating:

An increasing number of homeowners and professional landscapers are demanding cordless, eco-friendly options to the traditional noisy gas-powered yard tools we are all familiar with.

Makita is striving to meet this demand by expanding its line of cordless equipment, which includes the XCU03PT1.

Requiring less maintenance and with zero emissions, this chainsaw kit is a welcome answer for trimming and cutting applications.

Between its LXT batteries and the motor’s direct drive system, users get all of the benefits that a gas-powered chainsaw has to offer – without any of the associated hassles.

Read on to find out what the Makita XCU03PT1 Cordless Chain Saw Kit has to offer!

Features a front handguard that has been specially engineered to actuate the chain break when it's engaged.

The lack of mufflers, air filters, and sparks plugs mean that this chainsaw requires little to no maintenance.

  • Even when the batteries are fully charged, this chainsaw’s runtime is relatively short.
  • Many users have noted that the power switch is somewhat hard to engage and has a tendency to turn off immediately after the trigger is released.

  • The Makita made, Outer Rotor BL Brushless Motor, coupled with its direct drive system offers the same efficiency and power as a 32cc gas-powered chainsaw.
  • The variable speed trigger offers improved cutting performance.
  • The guide bar measures a generous 14”.
  • The front hand guard has been designed to actuate the chain brake when it is engaged.
  • The battery charge level indicator lets the operator easily know how much power is left in the batteries.

This Makita chainsaw features a generously sized, 14-inch guide bar, and the brushless motor offers a variable speed control.

At the heart and soul of this model are two LXT, 18-volt batteries, which offer an abundance of power and runtime. These powerful batteries, coupled with the Makita made outer-rotor brushless motor and unique direct drive system, offer users an unparalleled experience.

The batteries have LED indicator lights to show how much charge is available.

Noise & Ergonomics

Users have praised this chainsaw for its quiet operation. Even running at top speed, the noise output is less than 100 decibels, which increases user comfort. The ergonomically designed handles are padded for ease of use, and because this chainsaw weighs in at only 11.5 pounds, it is ideal for most individuals to use.

As aforementioned, the Makita XCU03PT1 requires virtually no maintenance. There are no mufflers or air filters to clean and no need to drain fuel before storing it. All it needs is to be stored in a location where it will be protected from the elements.

On the chainsaw, one will quickly notice that the bucking spikes are made of metal. This is a sign of the quality that has been put into the design of the chainsaw, and it also makes the chainsaw capable of withstanding heavy duty applications.

The electric brake has been designed to maximize user productivity.

On this model, the oversized oil filling port has a viewing window that enables the user to check the oil levels easily and to add oil as needed. Although the chain automatically lubricates itself, the amount of lubrication provided can be adjusted.

In addition to the batteries, a Makita-branded battery charger is also included.

The Rapid Optimum Charger directly talks to each battery’s built-in chip as the battery charges. To maximize battery life, the charger actively controls temperature, voltage, and current.

The charger’s fan continuously circulates air to and from the battery throughout the charging process to cool the battery, which causes faster charging time.

Each Makita chainsaw is equipped with a 3-year limited warranty on the charger, batteries, and the chainsaw itself; however, if damage occurs because users use non-Makita batteries or chargers, then the warranty is voided.

Makita XCU03PT1 Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Chain Saw Kit with 4 Batteries, 18V/14
  • Makita-built outer rotor BL Brushless motor direct-drive system provides high power efficiency...
  • Variable speed trigger and high chain speed (0-3, 940 fpm) for improved cutting performance
  • "Tool-less" chain adjustment for convenient operation and maintenance. Chain pitch : 3/8 inch
  • Built-in lock-off lever helps prevent the chain from accidentally engaging

The Makita XCU03PT1 Brushless Cordless Chainsaw is ideal for homeowners with small to medium sized yards.

It can be used for trimming, limbing, and taking down small trees. Its lightweight design, portability, and seamless performance make it an attractive option.

The primary downside to this chainsaw is its battery performance. Even with both batteries fully charged, the power can be drained in as little as 30 minutes when busy.

Overall it is well-rounded option for avid gardeners.  In fact it made our list of the best powered chainsaws.
